Functional medicine.

An individualized approach to identifying the root causes of disease — based on nutritional science, genomics, and epigenetics — and the natural protocols that resolve them.

What it is

Functional Medicine is an individualized approach to identifying the root causes of disease that are based on nutritional science, genomics, and epigenetics. Once identifying them, a protocol using natural agents is used. Nutraceuticals, herbal medicine, stress management, supplements, lifestyle changes, and detoxification plans all can be used to help restore function and health.

Functional Medicine can help those with chronic health issues, autoimmune diseases, thyroid disease, hormonal imbalances, digestive issues and much more. It uses the power of science, nature and medicine to get to the root cause.

The 'gray area'

Normal-lab range vs. functional range — the gap where symptoms live.

“Why are my blood tests normal but I don’t feelnormal?”

Sometimes standard tests are not enough. Innovative tests can be very valuable in identifying undetected causes of ailments. Functional Medicine uses these tests to understand the biochemistry behind a disease process and then apply the corresponding care to correct the imbalances.

In Functional Medicine, we also work in functional ranges versus regular laboratory ranges. This range is smaller and is where that marker is optimal. If you are normal-lab-low or normal-lab-high, this is a gray area where you may not be fully diseased or diagnosable, but you are beginning to experience symptoms. FM recognizes these gray areas and starts to address them before they become diseased.
